Hi! I just finished my 2nd of 6th round of Cisplatin, 6/25 external radiation. After I will have 4-5 brachytherapy sessions. I just had a few questions because it sounds like pure torture. The doctor said it will be a long day to set up for the treatments. Is it uncomfortable? Or do they give you enough drugs where you don’t know what’s going on? Thank you!

Talk less, smile more

I just saw this post and you may have already had a treatment or two by now. I had 3 brachytherapy sessions, the last one was two weeks ago. I had the same thought as you that it looks like torture! For each treatment, I checked in at the hospital at 6 or 7 am. They gave me IV drugs to relax me and then a spinal so that I was numb from the waist down. The procedure to place the device took about an hour I think, but I only remember bits and pieces. After that, I was taken to CT so they could plan the treatment. For each session I had two treatments about 5 hours apart that lasted about 10 minutes. I also had a one hour treatment of hyperthermia after the first radiation treatment. I was pretty loopy the whole time and as the spinal started to wear off, they were able to give me pain drugs through the IV so that I was comfortable. I went home by around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and then pretty much slept for the rest of the night. I was sore the next day, but it wasn’t terrible. I think my team did a great job of making it so I was not in pain and I was drowsy the whole time so I slept a lot of the time during the treatments. Brachy was definitely the hardest part of the treatments, but it was manageable. Make sure to let the doctors and nurses know if you need additional pain medication.

Thank you! I had mine done a few weeks ago also. They gave me morphine and Ativan. Those were enough and I did not have any pain. But I did have some discomfort but it was manageable.
