Hi, I'm Mary V O.

Anyone have any experience with Mekinist? My mom is about to start it and I’m trying to help her know what to expect. She has been stage 4 Melanoma for 3 years. She had great success with Keytruda, but that ran its course. She also had the Opdivo & Yervoy combo. After exhausting all immunotherapy options she tried a combination of 3 chemos, but the side effects were to severe. So Mekinist is the next treatment option.

Hi, I'm RUTH M.

I also tried the Opdivo&Yervoy combo.
I’ve been taking Mekinst & Tafinlar for about a year now. The first couple of months were difficult but I adjusted and now have very few side effects. It has worked well on the pelvic, abdominal and chest metastases. I’m not sure how effective it is on my brain metastases.
I hope that it works for your mom.

Hi, I'm LAWRENCE L L with stage 4 melanoma

Ben Bernal: not “still” taking it but had 2/4 infusions of a 4 course treatment in Dec/2015. Stopped after the 2nd infusion due to side effects but still here and in good health thank God. Still have metastasized tumors (stage 4) in my lungs but they stopped growing

Hi, I'm Ben.Bernal

Ben died on October 24th. Melanoma went from thumb which had been amputated, to his spine, liver, lungs, within 5 months. Had no idea melanoma could do this.

Hi, I'm LAWRENCE L L with stage 4 melanoma

Wow – I did a 2/4 Yervoy/Opdivo infusion course that ended in Dec 2015 also due to side effects! We tried Opdivo by itself the following year, 2016, that ended after 3 infusions due to side effects. And I also have metastasized tumors (stage 4) in my lungs that have stopped growing. I’m also in good health, thank God. I’ve recently gone from having a dermatological checkups and CAT scans from every 3mos to every 6mos but if Ben died w/in a 5mo period I’m going to talk to my oncologist about maybe re-thinking that. Thanks for the follow up on Ben and I send my condolences – I’m sorry to hear it.

Hi, I'm LAWRENCE L L with stage 4 melanoma

oops – just realized the post just before Ben’s last one (that I just commented on for its similarity to my situation) was my post. But thanks again for the heads up. I didn’t realize Melanoma could be so fast acting. So I still plan on talking to my oncologist about regular scheduled checkups.

Hi, I'm LAWRENCE L L with stage 4 melanoma

Question for Ben Bernal’s poster: What was Ben’s status when you posted on 10/2/2019 and what happened between then and your notice of his death on 10/24/2019 (22 days later)? Did he get a chance to try the combination immunotherapy treatment (Yervoy/Opdivo)?

Hi, I'm Ben.Bernal

Ben had thumb tip removed in May. Ulcerating. Heart bypass in June. 1 keytruda treatment, lots of nausea from pain meds . Had constant back pain after heart surgery. Was told prob pulled muscle. Med stop, med stop finally PC Doc ordered MRI . Labor day weekend had us admitted to hospital. CT’s, MRI’s found cancer all way up spine, fractures. Had 1 treatment Opdivo yervoy. Had 10 days radiation. Fentanyl patches started. More pain control. Looked awful on October 5th. Primary Care told me to call ambulance. Week in hospital. 4 units blood, 4 of platelets. More CT’s MRI’s. Cancer in liver tripled in size, cancer in lungs, cancer in abdomen, suspected in bone marrow. Shekarappa is incredible. Told him time to stop treatments, wasn’t going to do him any good. Be comfortable, call in hospice. Died on 24th October, peacefully, fully alert. Had given all our 11 children his fatherly blessing, individually while in hospital. Was a very prayerful, holy, accepting man who loved life. Dr Sumrall sent me a lovely card, saying how sorry he was that Ben had, had such a fast moving cancer. God bless all of you, suffering from this horrible disease. I pray that the treatments will work for you. We had no idea that melanoma could spread like this. Was just so fast.

Thank you. It’s good to hear what a good man he was and what a legacy he leaves behind – 11 children! May God bless them all and may you receive comfort from our God.
