I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in August 2017. Next month I’m scheduled to have a laparoscopic splenectomy to remove my severely enlarged spleen (now the same size as the adjacent liver), which has been a source of increasingly severe anemia (hemoglobin routinely 7.0-7.6) and a resultant debilitating shortness of breath (SOB). The latter results from both the anemia and the spleen’s pressing against my diaphragm. I am receiving weekly blood transfusions, which will apparently continue at least until spleen removal.
Have any of you had such a splenectomy for the same reasons as I? What were your reactions to the operation, and how did you fare during convalescence. Did spleen removal alleviate your anemia and/or SOB?
