Radiation treatment/side effects
I went through 5 1/2 weeks of radiation 8 years ago. My RT told me on the day of my last one my skin would look worse before it started to get better. The only effect I had was bright red skin, it stayed intact and never blistered. It seems it was within a month or so after completing it it was pretty much back to normal. Everyone heals at different rates.
I went through 36 radiation treatments follow bilateral breast surgeries earlier this year. Took three weeks for the redness to go away. Continued using the plant based cream they provided me for another two weeks.
I’m sorry you didn’t get to ring a bell after chemo. To me, that’s a big deal. I didn’t get to do that after finishing my radiation treatment. I did 16 rounds of radiation. I used the cream that they prescribed me faithfully. I usually tan pretty well, so I had no problems with my skin until after I finished treatment. My friend said I looked like a burnt marshmallow. No blisters, though. My skin turned black and gray and fell off, but it didn’t take long at all for it to look normal again. I can’t remember the timeframe, but all I remember is being surprised that my skin would do so well up until the very end. After a year and a half, the “tan” line is still slightly visible from the radiation.
I had 25 rounds of radiation after a bilateral mastectomy. The tech told me to expect the redness and pain the last week of treatment and that it would be at its worst about 10 days after my last treatment. They could not have been more accurate. I dealt with the burning and peeling for about 10 days and then the redness and pain were gone and skin back to “normal.” I did use something called LindiSkin that helped tremendously those last 10 days.
I went through 30 rounds of radiation treatments and didn’t get a ring either. Also had my last infusion, I thought they might say something. I got a congratulations after I told them it was my last. I guess it’s just a job for them, they don’t get it. All the staff has been nice throughout. Not complaining, just think they should make it a big deal when your all done. I have been through a year of treatments.
I got to ring a bell and was given a diploma for completing radiation. At my last chemo. infusion I was given a diploma, a song sung to me by some of the chemo. nurses, and a bottle of bubble soap after they blew some my way. All that was 8 years ago and I think about the end of treatment days often.
Am on Keytruda for urethelial cell cancer. Finished 15 days of radiation for new lesion on my liver. I had no skin problems. Did not use any kind of cream. Only fatigue toward the end of treatments and afterwards for a week or two.
